La FIA ne donne pas plus de détails, mais précise que la retranscription complète de la décision est disponible "sur demande" auprès de la Cour d'appel à Paris. Räikkönen avait gagné le Grand Prix du Brésil le 21 octobre à Sao Paulo pour remporter également la couronne mondiale. Lewis Hamilton (McLaren-Mercedes) avait terminé 7e et échoué à un point de Räikkönen au championnat. Leur disqualification aurait permis à Hamilton de récupérer les points de la 4e place et d'hériter sur tapis vert du titre mondial, ce qu'il avait refusé. La température en course de l'essence dans les réservoirs des Williams et des BMW Sauber avait été mesurée en dessous de la température autorisée. Les commissaires de course au Brésil avaient dans un premier temps refusé de leur infliger une pénalité estimant les mesures insuffisamment fiables.
